Joey Gipson started playing music at 6 years old with his dad playing country music on the electric bass, then at 7 started playing the upright bass with his grandparents who were die-hard bluegrassers. At 10 he picked up a banjo taught by his grandfather. He has won 24 state championships and 3 national top-3 finishes and counting. He had an opportunity to open a store in early 2026 and Stone Fort Music was born.
Joey Gipson is an American banjo player known for his energetic picking style and deep roots in traditional bluegrass music. Influenced by the classic three-finger Scruggs technique as well as progressive newgrass sounds, Gipson developed a reputation for blending precision, speed, and melodic creativity. Over the years, he has performed at regional festivals, collaborated with fellow string musicians, and built a following among fans of acoustic and roots music who appreciate both tradition and tasteful innovation.
Beyond live performance, Joey has also been recognized as a mentor and ambassador for the banjo. Through workshops, jam sessions, and instructional appearances, he has helped introduce new players to the instrument’s rich heritage while encouraging them to explore their own voice.
Michael Klug has been active in the old-time and fiddle contest scene around Middle Tennessee and the Southeast for years. He teaches fiddle and clawhammer banjo. Michael is also a member of the old-time stringband The Stones River Reelers, who perform for square dances, folk festivals, and other functions around the region and beyond. Together with Joey, he decided to open Stone Fort Music in downtown Manchester, Tennessee in late 2025. They hope it will be a good resource for area musicians seeking instruments, accessories and lessons, and a gathering place for the local acoustic music community as well.
